Officer hurt on coffee break entitled to workers' compensation

An appeals court recently ruled that a former police officer is entitled to receive workers' compensation after she was hit by a car while crossing the street to buy a cup of coffee. As of now, there is no word on if this ruling will set precedent for similar accidents in the future.

The accident happened back in April 2008 and caused injuries to her chest, neck, face, head and right foot. However, when a workers' compensation claim was filed, it was denied by the city.

Workers' compensation for employee who tested positive for drugs

Even though a restaurant server had marijuana and Xanax in her system at the time of a workplace injury, an appeals court has recently ruled in her favor. This means she is entitled to receive workers' compensation.

The accident happened back in 2008. At the time, the server was working for a seafood restaurant when she tripped over a box of potatoes that was left in the food preparation area. Right after the accident she went to the emergency room, and per the employer's workplace policy, she was given a drug test.

A workplace injury can be quite debilitating, and lead to workers' compensation and disability benefits. However, in some cases, while you may initially grant those benefits, do not be surprised if the employer and insurance company later try to fight back against any extensions on those benefits.

A worker who was severely injured when a refrigerator fell on him while at work learned this when he lost an appeal for an extension on his disability and workers' compensation benefits. His claim was that he was still in quite a good deal of pain.

Workers' compensation claim approved for man considered a hero

A 51-year-old, who had used his own body to try and protect three group home residents that he cared for during a tornado, has finally received the news he's been waiting for: His employer's workers' compensation provider will be paying for his past and future medical bills. This news came just one day after an article ran detailing the man's heroic acts, and the fact that the insurance provider had denied his request.

The entire ordeal dates back to May 22, when an EF-5 tornado touched down. At the time, the 51-year-old was caring for those living in a group home, and he and a co-worker attempted to protect three men with Down syndrome by placing a mattress on top of them. The two group home workers even used their own body weight on top of the mattress in an attempt to further protect the men.
